Reported Hard Disk Size

Q.My hard disk is a smaller size than I thought I had purchased. Where is the missing space?
A.The operating system is what reports the capacity of the hard drive. It uses the assumption that 1MB is equal to 1,048,576 bytes. The makers of your hard drive consider 1MB to be equal to 1,000,000 bytes. This is why the two numbers are not the same. If the drive is sold as a 3.2GB drive, the operating system will see it as around 3.05GB. This is normal.
