Modem Connection Speed |
 |
| Q. | I purchased a V.90 56K modem since my ISP supports the V.90 protocol. I am unable to connect at 56K. Is there something wrong with my modem? |
| A. | Very few people can reach a consistent 28,800 (v.34 modem), 33,600 (33.6k modem), or 56k (V.90 modem) bps connection. Speeds of 28,800 bps or faster, require perfect, almost ISDN quality, line conditions along the entire length of the connection. Variations in line quality are typically the cause of lower than expected connection rates. Modems are designed to slow connection rates to ones in which no errors occur during transmission. Error-causing variations are most often the result of older telephone wiring or poor physical connections. You may want to try another telephone jack, or replace the telephone cord used between the modem and the wall jack. |
